What new Immigrants Should do after Landing in Germany

What to do as soon as you land in Germany

Moving to a new country is an exciting affair. There are so many opportunities that wait and so many different things you need to see and do. The one thing you need to ensure you do, however, is settle in to your new home. In order for you to do this, there are several things you must check off your to-do list. Here are some of the main things you have to ensure you do in your first week in Germany.

Get accommodation

Whether you planned for this online or are yet to get to it, you need to ensure you have a place to stay. If you are around for a short time, there are serviced apartments that you can get. These are expensive for the long run so only look into it if you are there for a little while. If you need something more permanent, then you might want to consider getting a rental apartment in Germany. There are various online websites that will help with this.

Register with the authorities

If you plan on staying in Germany for more than three months, then you need to register with the local authority. The law requires that you register your local address at the local citizen’s office within two weeks of your arrival. It therefore means that you need to get accommodation within this time and provide the address as you register. Failure to do this will lead to getting fined up to 1000 euros.

Get health insurance

The healthcare system in Germany is one of the best in the world. To ensure you have access to it, you need to get yourself health insurance. Apart from the extensive travel insurance, you will need to get local insurance coverage when you settle in. Doing this helps you get any medical help that you might need when you are in the country.

Get a German bank account

One of the things you need to have when you are in Germany is a bank account. Opening a German bank account helps show your employer or even school that you have funds as long as you stay around. It also comes in handy when you get a job and need to cash in your first paycheck. A local bank account also makes easier for you to transact as you explore the country.

Get a German SIM Card

If you are looking for a way to keep in touch with your friends and family, then you need to get a German SIM card. It is affordable and will be better than any rates your home service provider might give you for roaming.  You can choose to get a prepaid SIM card or get a mobile contract. Weigh out these two options and go for the one that works best for you.

Sort out your transport

Even though there is the option of private cabs, the easiest way to move around Germany is through the public transport system. You can choose the bus, train, or tram. The one thing you need to remember is figure out your route, and how much it will cost. You also need to find a way to pay for this transport. If you plan to stay for longer, then getting on a monthly plan will be way cheaper and more effective for you.

With all these in place, you are finally ready to get started on your German adventure. Get out there and find out what this amazing country has to offer.  The opportunities are endless and the adventure will be worth your time.
